Call your Insurance first,

You’ve experienced a break down, bumper bashing or worse. Before you know it there will be several tow trucks on the scene jostling for your business. Some tow truck drivers will take full advantage of your state of shock, and your ignorance in a situation like this. They know exactly the words you need to hear. They are sympathetic, supportive and knowledgeable, or so it seems. There’s a good chance that may be the last time you ever see your vehicle. Before you know it you will be facing a huge towing and even huger storage bill, and they will keep your vehicle until it’s settled.

  1. Please be sure not to make any decisions until the shock has subsided and you are thinking clearly. Wait for law enforcement officers to arrive on the scene if possible.
  2. Keep your vehicle insurance details handy! (Enter these onto your phone right now!) Call them first. Every insurer will have a roadside assistance policy and tow trucks contracted to them.
  3. Never let the tow truck driver tow your car until you have received confirmation from your insurer that all is in order with the relevant details and tow truck. These guys are unfortunately not there to do you any favors – they just want your car in their pound.
  4. Take pictures of the accident scene, damage to vehicles, tow truck, tow truck registration, tow truck driver and any contract that needs to be signed. Write down the details of the tow truck company, name and ID of the driver.
  5. Ask questions & read the documents required for signing before you sign! (Especially if you are not insured)
  6. Remove all valuables and radio face, etc. from the vehicle before it is towed. Be sure to check the cubby hole, boot and under the seats.
  7. Take pictures of the condition of the car – many vehicles are stripped of parts and components while in the care of tow truck companies.
